Language + Brain: Coaching Expanded

Tell me and I’ll forget. Show me, and I may not remember. Involve me, and I’ll understand.” –Native American proverb

The articles listed under PAGES/Language+Brain: Coaching Expanded (in the right hand  column) relate to different aspects  of language, brain-based  information, and the coaching relationship. These articles illustrate the tools I use in Common Thread Coaching that help move a person toward well-being and new horizons.

As a poet and writer, I’ve experienced profound changes in my life through the creative practice of writing. It guides me through confusion and unknown territory, and  provides a space to voice beauty and joy. The deep, innate knowing contained within poems and poetic prose can be powerful instigators of change and insight. It isn’t only the written word—the language contained in our inner and outer dialogues are far more powerful than is normally realized.

Brain-based coaching uses scientific knowledge of the brain’s functioning and its amazing ability to physiologically change from old patterns of thought to new patterns (neuroplasticity). I became fascinated by the functioning of the brain and how changes can occur by  asking the question: How does poetry activate insight and change? The current wealth of brain- function knowledge, along with mindful use of language, are eye-opening and freeing tools that ground and support your efforts toward the often-dreaded processes called change and transition.

“Nancy used poetic insights to help me reach deeper inside to find some things I had lost and to build on some gifts that I love to use. She builds on your gifts and utilizes effective coaching techniques to help you achieve much more than you thought you could alone.” —Dennis Meyer, CEO Non-profit, Indiana

“Nancy encouraged me to explore my attraction to particular words. A chore transformed into an opportunity. An overwhelming event became an exciting one. I learned of each word’s authority as it defined my experience.” —Nancy Borris, writer, Texas
